GNUmedia is inspired by, and adheres to, the values set forth by Richard Stallman and the Free Software Foundation. We are guided by the values of Freedom, Equality, and Community, in the pursuit of a globally liberated network of media and mass communications. Our values are:
- Access - access to communications infrastructure, information, and tools - for any purpose.
- Openness - open communications infrastructure, software source code, and multimedia source data.
- Sharing - the freedom to share the culture we discover and create - with anyone who we choose, anywhere, anytime, for any purpose.
- Generativity - the freedom to build upon the culture that surrounds us, create derivative works, remixes, and re-contextualize knowledge.

The GNUmedia are creating and distributing multi-media (text, audio, video, computer code, &c) in a manner compatible with (or in the spirit of) the GNU General Public License (GPL).

GNUmedia promotes Open Data and Services, as described by opendata.org via the Open Definition.

The Open Software Service Definition (OSSD), which defines ‘openness’ in relation to online (software) services, can be summed up in the statement that:
“A service is open if its source code is Free/Open Source Software and non-personal data is open as in the Open Definition.”
